A Little History

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race that is done at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

It is held on the first Saturday in May every year.

It is a race performed by Thoroughbreds spanning a distance of one and a quarter mile.

The very first derby was performed at Churchill Downs on May 17, 1875.

10,000 people attended and watched the very first derby race.

How It All Began

Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. was the grandson of General William Clark, from the Lewis and Clark expedition.

He was the son of Meriwether Lewis Clark, Sr. and Abigail Prather Churchill.

His mother Abigail was from one of the very first families in Kentucky.

Moving to Lousiville is 1787, they purchased 300 acres of land south of the city.

Meriwether Jr later lived with his aunt and uncle after his mother passed. His aunt and uncle donated the land in which Churchill Downs was built.

Tradition

Growing up in Kentucky myself, I am very familiar with the Kentucky Derby.

It is a celebrated event in my family. My father frequently visits Churchill Downs to watch horse racing.

Every year we have a derby party.

There is always a spread of food and friends and family will come and we have a great time betting on the horses and enjoying the food.

Now that I am a mother I am carrying on the tradition in my home and I now host my own derby party.

This recipe is one I have on my table every year and it always is one of the first things to go.

Fast and Easy

On my table for a derby party, I have a nice spread.

It can be time-consuming when you are hosting an event and have to do all the cooking.

I have bbq and spicy hot wings, deviled eggs, Italian pasta salad, along with some extra pick foods.

This recipe is also on my table. It takes no time at all to make and is made from very simple ingredients.

There is no cooking involved here. Just chill it and serve. Easy!
